KK, whose real name was Krishnakumar Kunnath, passed away on Tuesday in Kolkata at the age of 53. When the singer fell ill, he was performing Nazrul Mancha for Gurudas College’s fest. He became ill unexpectedly and returned to his hotel. He was rushed to the CMRI hospital in Kolkata when his condition worsened, where he was declared dead.
According to sources, the singer told the organizers that he was not feeling well during the show, but he still performed. He then became ill and returned to the hotel. His condition worsened, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
His wife and two sons are scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on Wednesday morning. In the last two days, KK has performed two back-to-back shows in Kolkata.
Actor Akshay Kumar called KK’s death ‘a big loss’. He wrote on Twitter, “Extremely sad and shocked to know of the sad demise of KK. What a loss! Om Shanti 🙏🏻.”
As soon as the news of his death broke, people from all walks of life paid tribute. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. Cricketer Virender Sehwag also paid his condolences to KK’s family as he wrote on Twitter, “Tragic to hear about the passing away of KK after falling ill while performing in Kolkata. Another reminder of how fragile life is. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”
Actor Swastika Mukherjee also condoled his death, “KK passed away. Can’t believe what I just heard.” Singer Rahul Vaidya said he was ‘beyond shocked’ at the news of KK’s death. He tweeted, “I hear singer KK just passed away. GOD what is really happening!!?? I mean WHAT IS HAPPENING. One of the nicest humans kk sir was. Gone too soon at 53. Beyond shocked. RIP sir.”
Pal, KK’s first album, was released in 1999. The singer-composer, whose real name was Krishnakumar Kunnath, concentrated on Bollywood rather than independent music at the time, scoring hits like Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999), Dus Bahane (Dus, 2005), and Tune Maari Entriyaan (Gunday, 2014).
KK sang in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, and Assamese, among other languages. He made his playback singing debut with AR Rahman’s hit songs “Kalluri Saaley” and “Hello Dr.” from Kadir’s Kadhal Desam, followed by “Strawberry Kannae” from AVM Productions’ musical film Minsara Kanavu (1997).
He was born in Delhi and was well-known for his riveting live performances. As recently as eight hours ago, his Instagram page was posting updates from his concert in Kolkata.
