Laura Dern Reveals She Was Only 23 Years Old in Original Jurassic Park Movie. Laura Dern was 26 when “Jurassic Park” was released in theatres in 1993, but she was only 23 when filming began. Her character, Dr. Ellie Sattler, falls in love with Sam Neill’s character, Dr. Alan Grant, a much older scientist. Neill was 43 at the time of filming, but neither actor seemed to mind the 20-year age difference between their characters.
The actress revealed this in a new interview with the Sunday Times, stating she was just 23 when she played in the first ‘JURASSIC PARK’ in 1993… and the man himself joked about the age gap with her costar at the time.
Neill, who allegedly conducted the interview with Dern, is cited as adding, “I’m a lot older than LD.” “Laura is 20 years my senior! Which was a perfectly acceptable age gap for a starring man and lady at the time!”
Dern agrees and explains, “Falling in love with Sam Neill seemed entirely fitting. And it wasn’t until we returned in a time of cultural knowledge about patriarchy that I realized, “Wow!” ‘Are we different ages?'”
This late finding hasn’t just taken Neill and Dern by surprise. Many “Jurassic Park” fans were particularly irritated by the fact that the actress who played Dr. Ellie Sattler, a famous paleobotanist, appeared to be younger than the youngsters in the film.
Despite their reservations about the initial romance storyline, Dern and Neill agreed to reprise their roles in the current sequel, which reunites them with Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm. Many fans are excited to see the original cast members return, and the actors are quick to remind out that they, not the dinosaurs, are the true stars of the picture.
People were drawn to this for a lot of reasons: first, Dern’s comments are being read as snarky and as a dig on the concept that a woman Sam’s age (at the time) couldn’t or wouldn’t be cast — thus implying double standards in the industry.
Of course, Laura didn’t say it precisely like that… and that argument doesn’t hold up when compared to the source material (the novel) and when Drs. Grant and Sattler are portrayed as being in their late 20s and 40s, respectively. Her character was always supposed to be a kid.
